Thermo-Mechanically Treated (TMT) metal bars are highstrengthreinforcement bars that have a tough outer core anda soft inner core; this provides superior tensile strength,ductility and elongation point. The manufacturing processalso improves corrosion-resistance and weldability. Withthese characteristics, TMT reinforcement bars play animportant role in the construction industry, finding use inbuildings, roads, and dams.TMT bar manufacture is a continuous process and involvespassing steel rods through a rolling mill stand, and thenthrough a water cooling system. The process comprisesa continuous caster/ reheating furnace, rolling stands, TMTline, pinch rollers, continuous (or flying) shears, tail brakes,and an automatic cooling bed. Because of restrictions oncooling bed length, and for ease of transportation, bars aregenerally cut in-line to 60 meters. High speed bar mills usea continuous rotating shear; this is a low inertia shear drivenby an induction motor, and offers higher productivity thanstart-stop flying shears. The bars are further cut to 12 meterswith cold shears.A shifter diverts the bar from one channel to another toprovide consistent cutting support. Conventionally,pneumatic shifters are used for this process; to improvecutting precision at high speeds and to avoid wastage, thesecan be replaced with servo shifters. As the bar originates continuously from the rolling mill, a diverter tube driven bythe servo motor moves it into the path of the blades to cut itto the desired length. Using servo shifters improvesconsistency and precision in cutting, and provides highholding torque at both park positions that guide the bar inthe two channels.The servo motor is mounted vertically through a cam, whichmoves the shifter in steps of 900 or 1800 as per the desiredposition relative to the continuous shear blades. The controlsystem puts the blade motor in position-synchronizationwith the bar movement.
